In the future, E-textbooks will become an important learning tool in the classrooms. However, E-textbooks encountered many challenges and limitations in the promotion in education. The main reason is that the past E-textbooks system only provides information to learners, and it did not aim at the needs of learning and teaching to improve and design the system. There are many crucial learning behaviors that are indispensable in the process of learning, hence, those important learning behaviors and assisted tool should be included in the design of E-textbooks. For these reasons, the study will be conducted in two and a half years.
In the first year, current status of E-textbooks systems in industry and academia will be inquired, and universal necessary functions will be the basis in the system development. According to the aforementioned foundations, the prototype of the "NAER E-textbooks System" will established, providing various common and necessary functions. Pilot Study will be conducted on the elementary school children to explore the impact and effectiveness of the system. Subsequently, an interview will be hold to understand teachers' perspectives on using the " NAER E-Textbook System".
In the second year, the system will be revised according to the results of pilot study, interview and experience, and then a formal experiment will be conducted on the elementary school students in the middle and upper grades to explore the impact of the system and the effectiveness of universal necessary functions. Finally, based on the results and experience, the indicators of the E-textbook system will be established to provide important suggestions for the Ministry of Education to promote E-textbooks in the future.
