The recent research has indicated the weakness and problems of the rationales and implications in the Grade 1-9 Nine-Year Curriculum. However, only little research has discussed about the trend of subject framework in the past curricula. Thus, this study aims to analyze the change of the learning subjects in the past curricula and its context. This study was conducted through historical research method. The result of this study showed that the changes of the teaching subjects in the past curricula were influenced by the political and social phenomena, the educational trend, and the ideas of powerful people. Finally, it proposed three suggestions for the future curriculum: 1) the change of learning subjects should be supported by the solid theory and empirical study; 2) the change of curriculum should be based on the experience of the previous curriculum; 3) the forms of ‘learning areas’ can be kept, but the relationship between ‘learning areas’ and ‘learning subjects’ needed to be clarified.
