There is still no related research on how to use textbooks with competence-oriented teaching. As the new Curriculum Guideline is implemented, this study aims to explore how general high school teachers’ usage of textbooks can correspond to the cultivation of core competences. The focuses of this study are the main subjects in senior high school, Mandarin, English, Math, Social Studies and Natural Science. In the first year, this research will interview experts and focus groups, in order to construct primary dimension index for the textbook usages that implement the core competences. In the second year, questionnaire survey will be adopted to delineate how high school teachers and students interpret the idea of competence-oriented textbook usage, how teachers practice such usage of textbooks, and parents’ opinion on textbook. Then, through in-depth interviews, this study will further clarify the result of the questionnaire survey and strategies of problem solving, and propose the textbook usage principles which can implement the core competences.
